【 Kinetic structure 動くもの】


「動く大地に驚いて、動かぬ大地になぜ驚かぬ」

絵や彫刻、建築は動かないと思っていたのですが、ある時から絵も彫刻も建築も動くものだと気づきました。機械仕掛のことではありません。オーディエンスの眼と脳が動かすのです。
それでも時に機械仕掛けに興味を持ってしまうのは、中2の頃1971年関西本線電化によってSLオタクの道が絶たれた空白をうめるためでしょうか。

左右にパンする2台のライブカメラと上下する2台のブラウン管、水が循環するダイオラマと子宮内で聴く鼓動をシュミレーションした音(水中マイク)などで構成された、山水画的絵画空間のための装置。ON/OFFタイマーコントロールされた光源は、内部ダイオラマとプロジェクターからの映像を交互にハーフミラー上に映し、同時にライブカメラによって取り込まれたオーディエンスのブラウン管映像を合成する。

Two lights are flashing with the pace of heartbeat toward audience who stands in front of the work. Two CCD cameras are scanning audience continually while panning to right and left. The images scanned (audience) are distributed to two Braun tubes in the front part of the work and two monitors located on each side of the work. The monitors in the front part move up and down constantly. The images on the Braun tubes are reflected on the half mirror at the front. The monitors on the sides stay still and reflect the images of audience on the half mirror. Inside of the upper part of the work there is a diorama of ruins, and audience sees the composite images of the diorama and themselves on the half mirror, which is fixed at the aperture of the work with an angle of 45 degrees. The images of audience move in the diorama to left and right, back and forth without them moving actually, because of the continuous movement of the CCD cameras and Braun tubes.

Audience wonders around within images as fragments of the "world." / The light-switch OFF period

Visual images as fragments of the world, which are edited in the length of several tens of seconds each, are projected on the half mirror at the aperture from inside of the upper part. These visual images consist of abstract images responding to fire, water and heartbeat, animation of fetus and chromosome's multiplication, and images of jelllyfish and hydrospace. These images appear only when the light inside of the work is off. The images correspond with the diorama of ruins (see description 1), which is set in the spot of image projection, and with the sound from the work (simulation of womb's filtering sound; see description 3), or transform the inside space into hydrospace or inside of womb. When the light inside of the work is off, the diorama inside becomes invisible. And the images of audience, which is captured by the CCD cameras, are synthesized with the images projected from inside of work on the halfmirror and the images wonder around within the work. As for the function 1 and the function 2, audience sees both images, as the light inside of the work is timer-controlled. Audience is thrown into the complex environment of the appearance of the work, sound, visual images, lights and others.

drawing:// This construct consists of the upper part (a wooden womb protected with a big plastic pelvis) and the lower part ( machine of Bachelor), and it moves as if imitating our sexual activities towards birth of human beings. Audience, who approach the construct to see it closely, is converted in the visual images and then they would recognize themselves as flash light within the work. The audience is transformed to the flashing light and captured into the work. The images of audience move around in the diorama set inside of the construct, though they are actually standing still. Forward and backward, left and right. Audience looking at the work from the outside sees their composite images inside of the work. In terms of the functions, the construct can be divided into the image theatre (the upper part) and the visual device (the lower part), as well as the separation by the appearance. These two parts are synthesized as composite images on the half mirror at the aperture of the work. While most image composition is processed electronically and on flat surfaces, this work is unique as it is a three-dimensional construct with physical depth. This work with primitive technology transforms the place where the work is set and the place where audience stands.
The diorama of ruins inside of the work metaphorizes the "world" as the outside of us which we usually look at. We human beings embrace the stream of the big cosmos within our bodies and the process of birth. Today the concept itself is becoming ruins. It is left to the conscious of the audience whether they see the diorama inside of the work as a restful image that leads us to return to mother's womb or as abandoned world that does not have place to return.

Functional Description 3:
Simulation sound of filtering sound in womb / Full time

Simulation of filtering sound in womb that fetus would hear is played in the exhibition space full time. A river flows in the diorama. The water flows from the back to the front and stored in the tank and then circulated to the upper part repeatedly with a pump. A speaker is set in the bottom panel of the water tank and it plays the abnormal heartbeat sampled from educational material in medicine. A microphone set in the water in the tank picks up the heartbeat, which vibrates the water tank and outputs the sound to the exhibition space.

保育器をイメージした部分がコントローラーのキネティックストラクチャー。
子宮内胎児映像をあやすように手を動かすことで構造物が動く。
